LIV Golf Players Competing for Open Championship Spots This Week

Written on 02/26/2025

Six LIV Golf players are teeing it up this week with hopes of securing a spot in the 2025 Open Championship through the Open Qualifying Series.

At the Asian Tour’s New Zealand Open, one coveted exemption is up for grabs for the top player not already qualified. New Zealand’s Ben Campbell (RangeGoats GC) and Danny Lee (Iron Heads GC), along with Australia’s Lucas Herbert (Ripper GC), are all in the hunt. Campbell has twice been a runner-up at this event, while Herbert finished second in 2020. The historic tournament, dating back to 1907, will be played at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown.

Meanwhile, Dean Burmester, Branden Grace, and Charl Schwartzel of Stinger GC will compete in their home country’s Investec South African Open at Durban Country Club. One of the world’s oldest national opens, first played in 1903, the event offers three spots for The Open to the top finishers not already exempt. Burmester is the defending champion, while Grace claimed victory in 2020.

Among the six LIV Golf players in action, two are already guaranteed major starts in 2025—Schwartzel as a past Masters champion and Burmester with his PGA Championship qualification.

Looking ahead, the International Series Macau, set for March 20-23, will offer three additional Open Championship spots.

A total of 11 LIV Golf players have already secured their place at Royal Portrush for The Open on July 17-20, with more hoping to join the field through upcoming qualifiers.
