Jordan Spieth emerged as one of the most remarkable golfers of the last decade. Since turning professional in 2012, he accumulated 11 wins between 2013 and 2017, securing three major titles along the way. During his 2014-15 peak, he nearly made history by winning three consecutive majors, only to be narrowly edged out in the final rounds of the 2015 Open Championship.
Yet, after this golden period, Spieth's momentum slowed. Following a four-year trophy drought, he finally claimed the 2021 Valero Texas Open, followed by a win at the 2022 RBC Heritage. Fans have often speculated on the reasons behind this dip, but recent insights may offer new explanations from a surprising source.
The Role of the Player Advisory Council (PAC) on Spieth’s Form
Recently, pro golfer Michael Kim provided a candid view into the demands faced by members of the PGA Tour's Player Advisory Council (PAC). During an interview on The Smylie Show, Kim explained the impact of PAC responsibilities on a player’s game. He shared, “If you check their (PAC members) FedExCup rankings, it’s not going to be the most beneficial thing to your game.” He went on to describe how PAC members often juggle meetings and conversations on tour-related issues, potentially interfering with their focus on the game.
Kim shared a story about Adam Scott, a current PAC board member, who had to join a lengthy board call just hours before an early tee time. Kim called PAC duties a “legit job,” underscoring the challenging balance between the council’s obligations and maintaining peak athletic performance.
Notably, Spieth joined the PAC in 2018, shortly after his winning streak ended, and later became chairman of the board. This position not only added new responsibilities but also came with stress, as former PAC chairman Rory McIlroy mentioned when he cited “time” and “energy” as reasons for stepping down. This added pressure may have affected Spieth’s consistency on the course.
Looking Ahead for Jordan Spieth
In January 2025, Camilo Villegas will take over Spieth’s role as director of the PAC, allowing Spieth to focus on his game. Fans hope that stepping away from these added responsibilities will enable Spieth to recapture his winning form and deliver more memorable performances. As of now, he continues to serve on the PGA Tour Enterprises board, and supporters remain optimistic about a strong comeback for the 31-year-old star.
