As LIV Golf heads into the 2025 season, the league is making significant changes—not just with new players, venues, and a fresh TV partnership, but also with a revamped tournament format.
What’s Changing?
LIV Golf will continue with its 14-event schedule, 54-hole format, and team competition, but there’s a key adjustment:
🔹 All four player scores will now count in every round.
Previously, only the top three scores from each team were counted in the first two rounds, with all four counting only in the final round. This change is designed to add more pressure on every player while increasing the drama and unpredictability on the team leaderboard throughout the event.
Player Reactions & Future Possibilities
The league’s format has been a topic of debate since its launch, with some advocating for a switch to 72 holes. Jon Rahm has suggested that a four-round format could help bridge the gap between LIV Golf and traditional tours, while Phil Mickelson has hinted that such a change might be considered in the future.
Meanwhile, LIV has been experimenting with new competitive structures. In late 2024, captains were allowed to choose their match-play pairings during the Team Championship, a move praised by Cameron Smith as a way to add more strategy and excitement.
Looking Ahead
The 2025 LIV Golf season kicks off tomorrow in Riyadh, marking the start of what could be the league’s most dynamic season yet. With its latest format tweak, LIV Golf continues to evolve, aiming to bring more excitement and competitive edge to team play.
Stay tuned as the season unfolds!
